    The Polish heraldic system is one of clans and septs. The noble (or Szlachta) families, were the clans (or Rody); some clans had several hundred families (septs) under their wing; a sept could use the clan coat of arms, some septs also had their own, and some clans had more than one coat of arms registered over the years.     Please note that the term "family crest" is a misnomer. The crest is actually a portion of the coat of arms. It refers to the region above helmet that is on top of the shield, which often depicts beasts. Our coats of arms have omitted the crest portion of the arms.
